No voting on this one – just a couple of really nice one-offs by Chris King and Giovanni Battaglin that were built to commemorate the March 11, 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, and then auctioned off to charity .
Well-known maker of high-end headsets, hubs, and bottom brackets, Chris King partnered with Japananese distributor of said components, SimWorks, to produce this Cielo cyclocross bike – which is actually a lesser-known fact: Chris King has been making Cielo frames for a long time. This Cielo CX Racer is simply dubbed, ‘11.3.11’.
Giovanni Battaglin partnered with designer Marco Chiurato to produce the one-off ‘Fukushima 131’ based on his C13 roadbike frameset. The red cicle with a ‘deformed’ top tube represents the devastative force of the Japanese earthquake. And the 131 moniker is for iodine 131 – the radioactive isotope that was released from the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown.
