Col d’Izoard is a famous mountain pass in the French Alps that has been part of the Tour de France on a regular basis. At an average grade of 6.9%, the 15.9km ascent climbs some 1,100 meters to an elevation of 2,361 meters, with portions maxing out at 14% grade. It was inevitable. Serious mountain and CX races have known this all along. Disc brakes work. Extremely well. Especially in wet and muddy conditions. Road racers have poo-poo’d it because steel discs adds weight, and unnecessarily complicated – Occam’s Razor comes to mind, ie. the simplest solution is usually the best and correct one.
